You got the offer. Now comes the moment most people dread: the salary conversation.

Here's the truth: almost every offer has room for negotiation. Employers expect it. They build buffer into their offers specifically because candidates negotiate.

The Golden Rule

Never give a number first. The person who says a number first loses leverage.

If they ask your salary expectations early:

"I'm focused on finding the right fit. I'd love to learn more about the role before discussing compensation. What range do you have budgeted for this position?"

The Counter-Offer Script

Script 1: The Enthusiastic Counter

"Thank you for the offer—I'm genuinely excited about joining [Company]. After reviewing everything, I'd like to discuss the base salary. Based on my research and the value I'll bring, I was hoping we could get closer to [X]. Is there flexibility there?"

Script 2: The Market Data Counter

"I've done research on market rates for this role, and the range I'm seeing is [X to Y]. Given my experience, I believe I should be at the higher end. Can we discuss getting to [specific number]?"

Handling Pushback

If they say "This is our final offer":

"I understand there may be constraints. Can you help me understand what other elements might be flexible? Signing bonus, additional PTO, or work flexibility?"

If they ask you to justify your number:

"Based on my [X years in Y], my track record of [achievement], and the market rate for this role, I believe [number] reflects my value."

Beyond Base Salary

If they truly can't move on salary, negotiate:

  • Signing Bonus
  • Equity/Stock Options
  • Start Date
  • Remote Work
  • Extra PTO
  • Title
  • Review Timeline
